Can you help me raise funds for The Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust?
‘Feb 2015 – I sat on the floor of a veterinary practice while Fleur laid semi-conscious in a cage… the vet told me that Fleur’s time was up. He could do no more. Fleur would be PTS…
Fleur – cruelly mutilated in Romania. Surviving the cruellest treatment, crudely spayed that her intestines were left hanging out.
Treatment to her damaged intestines had failed. Her only hope… a very slim hope, was surgery at the Queen Mother Hospital, Royal Veterinary College (RVC), Potters Bar. Her only chance of survival.
We can all probably think of lots of reasons why we shouldn’t have helped this one dog, but it would be a cruel world where we did all just all look the other way – we can’t save them all, but was that any reason to let Fleur die?
2018… Fleur lives. The team of surgeons, medical staff, nurses and carers all came together on that night and following days to provide Fleur with pioneering health care, highlighting the very ethos of the RVC.
Fleur has blossomed into a remarkable dog, continually surprising all those who treated and saved her life with her resilience and determination to live. She has even found a way of giving back by being a very successful Pets as Therapy & Read2Dog, visiting many schools and care homes.
For me finding a way to repay RVH has been a priority… The RVC Animal Care Trust provides assistance to the College’s research teams in their endeavours to pioneer new treatments and cures for the diseases that cause (your) pets such suffering and they support the College’s commitment to excellence in veterinary education, to ensure we have the best veterinary professionals and scientists of the future. And that costs money.
A chance meeting with a veterinary nurse who had treated Fleur on that night convinced me to run in the 2017 Mucky Pup, but tragedy struck with our Border Collie Nero succumbing to cancer days before the event… I was in no place to attend. Fast forward one year and I was successful in applying to run the Royal Parks half marathon in aid of RVH Animal Care Trust. So on 14 Oct 2018 I’ll take a very slow trot around the Royal Parks… if you’d be so kind to offer up a few coins which will go direct to those at the RVC we can all then reflect on Fleur’s story with some positivity;
We can all probably think of lots of reasons why we shouldn’t have helped this one dog, but it would be a cruel world where we did all just all look the other way – we can’t save them all… but with your donations the RVC can certainly help safe a good few more Fleurs”.
