TOP TIPS TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SEPTIC SYSTEM THIS WINTER

Protect your soakaway – do not drive over it, build a structure on top of it, or cover it with concrete or tarmac. Grass and gravel are OK for foot traffic. Avoid planting trees or large shrubs near the soakaway area

Only use household products labelled ‘suitable for septic tanks’ or ‘environment friendly’– to avoid upsetting the bacterial balance in your tank and soakaway.

Use household cleaning products in moderate amounts – try using a little less detergent in your washing machine and dishwasher. Check your detergent is ‘Low or Zero Phosphate’.

Try to use less water – space out showers, baths, laundry and dishwasher loads to avoid lots of water washing through the system close together.

Use a sink strainer as food scraps cause sludge to build-up more quickly – put them in your compost bin together with coffee grounds, fats, oils and greases
