THE JANE AUSTEN SONGBOOK – 4 OCTOBER, ST PETER’S

On Saturday 4 October at 7.00pm in St Peter’s Church Ropley, the Hampshire community will be treated to a very special concert to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. Heading the bill will be internationally renowned soprano Susan Gritton. Susan has sung many a leading role in most of the world’s top opera houses, including The Grange. Eleanor Medcalf, up-and-coming harpist and Jane Austen expert, will be accompanying Susan in the concert in songs well known by Jane Austen.

Joining the soprano & harp duo will be the Choir from Perins School, Alresford. With such a strong performing arts tradition at this fabulous secondary school, it was a huge opportunity to give these talented pupils a chance to sing alongside a famous singer. Together they will performing a world première – a new setting of a prayer by Jane Austen, by Ropley-based composer Peter Gritton.

Interspersed between songs will be readings from Jane Austen’s letters and novels, delivered by Henrietta Garden (Vera Gissing in One Life) and James Larkin (Master Treasurer Fitzwilliam in Wolf Hall). Two illustrious screen actors – also Ropley residents!
